TALKING AND DANCING WITH NIGEL CHARNOCK

Talking and Dancing:

Exploring voice, character, and story in contemporary dance

Tara Cheyenne Performance presents a special 2-day workshop intensive with special guest artist Nigel Charnock (UK).

Dates: June 22 & 23, 1pm – 6pm
Venue: SFU Woodwards – Courtyard Studio, 4th Floor
Location: 149 West Hastings St, Vancouver BC
Cost: $125 regular registration

Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg first met Nigel Charnock in Vancouver when his solo work Frank, was presented at The Dance Centre in 2005. Inspired by his virtuosic and provocative brand of physical theatre, she found an artistic kindred spirit. Both masters of the fusion between movement, music, spoken word & black comedy, their work pushes the established boundaries of a dance spectacle.

This June, Nigel will be joining Tara as an outside eye during a creation residency at The Cultch (along with performers Alison Denham, Billy Marchenski, Bevin Poole & Kim Tuson). Together, they will be working on material for a new ensemble work, Highgate. An excerpt will show at Dancing on the Edge Festival 2011 & the full-length will premiere in 2012/13. We are pleased to offer this workshop intensive at SFU Woodwards while Nigel is in town!

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP INTENSIVE
This intensive is geared towards the experienced performer (both actors & dancers) and is designed to provide exposure and a platform for experimentation in dance-theatre; specifically in contemporary dance forms, improvisation and voice technique. The workshop will explore how the voice influences movement and vice versa. Participants will learn to use voice as a vehicle to serve the choreographic process. Performance hybrids will be analyzed from a dance-centric perspective.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
Nigel Charnock is a founding member of DV8 Physical Theatre, and began his own company, Nigel Charnock+Company, in 1995. Nigel has created throughout Europe and right here in Canada for the likes of Noam Gagnon & Louise Lecavalier. He is perhaps most well known for his unique solo performances, including Human Being, Hell Bent, Original Sin, Resurrection, Frank & Fever.
